Asbestos & Hazardous Materials Consultants Association

au

Industry body for asbestos and hazardous materials consultants.

AHCA is the closest thing Australia has to a dedicated professional body for asbestos and hazardous materials consultants, with a working line into SafeWork NSW, NSW EPA and ASEA.

How they got started

AHCA launched publicly on 29 July 2019 with an inaugural event at Lend Lease in Sydney, attended by around 105 industry professionals. The founding organisers were Fraser Elder, John Batty, Leroy Brown, Nigel Johnson, Jason North, Simon Butterfield and Peggy Trompf, with John Batty serving as inaugural President. The gap they set out to fill was a national forum for asbestos and hazmat consultants with a direct line into regulators on technical interpretation of WHS regulations.

What they stand for

AHCA's stated mission is to drive and encourage best practice through consultation and knowledge sharing across the asbestos and hazardous materials sector. The association brings consultants, industry, regulators, academia and community into one forum, bridges the gap between regulatory guidance and what is practical on site, and challenges air-monitoring and assessment practices that fall short of WHS Regulations. Members sign onto a published code of conduct.

How they help the industry

  • Member directory: public listing of corporate consultancy members on the AHCA website
  • ASBINS Working Group: direct regulator engagement on asbestos-in-soils issues with SafeWork NSW, NSW EPA and ASEA
  • Position papers: consensus consultant views fed to regulators and standards bodies
  • Mentoring program: pairs Provisional members with senior practitioners
  • CPD events and webinars: Asbestos Focus Month sessions, AGMs, networking and technical seminars, often co-hosted with AIOH

Notable initiatives

The ASBINS Working Group, formed in early 2020, meets fortnightly to address asbestos-in-soils issues with regulators and industry. On 29 August 2024, AHCA published Position Paper PP-001 on the reliability of asbestos fibre air monitoring results without metrological traceability, arguing such monitoring is non-compliant with WHS Regulations. In November 2025 the association ran an Insurance & Risk Workshop at Rydges World Square Sydney, and its Winter Warm-Up 2025 featured presentations from ASSEA, VAEA and SafeWork NSW.

Why it matters for asbestos professionals

For licensed asbestos assessors, occupational hygienists and hazmat consultants, AHCA membership puts you inside the working groups and position-paper consultations that shape how state regulators interpret WHS rules on soils, air monitoring and remediation. For consultancies, the corporate listing also provides visibility within a peer network that includes most of Australia's larger hazmat firms.
