AHRCA NSW is effectively the only state-level peak body dedicated specifically to asbestos and hazmat abatement work in New South Wales, representing around 27 contractors, consultants, suppliers and trainers.
How they got started
The association was established in 1991 and marked its 30th year in 2021. It originally formed to give NSW removalists a single voice on WHS compliance and later broadened its remit to cover other hazardous materials alongside asbestos. Membership spans licensed Class A (friable) and Class B (non-friable) asbestos removal contractors, asbestos consultants, equipment and PPE suppliers, training providers, insurers and demolition builders working with hazmat.
What they stand for
AHRCA NSW exists to encourage the safe removal or treatment of asbestos and hazardous materials in NSW workplaces, keep members current on Work Health & Safety legislation and SafeWork NSW codes of practice, raise public awareness of asbestos and hazmat risks, promote professionalism and ethical conduct among licensed removalists, and act as an advocate to government and regulators on behalf of the NSW asbestos abatement industry.
How they help the industry
- Member directory: vetted Class A and Class B removalists, consultants, suppliers, trainers and insurers, segmented by licence class and service category
- WHS updates and bulletins: tracking changes to NSW asbestos law, SafeWork NSW codes of practice and regulator activity
- IR and legal support: industrial relations and pay-rate guidance, contract support and legal advice
- Bundled MBA NSW membership: included at no extra cost via AHRCA's affiliation, giving access to MBA award interpretation, contracts library and training catalogue
- Member savings: on fuel, vehicles, telephone plans, mobile phones, health insurance and training courses
Notable initiatives
AHRCA NSW is a publicly listed partner of RespFit, the national respiratory fit-testing accreditation scheme administered by AIOH. This is directly relevant for members doing Class A friable removal where P3 respiratory protection is mandated. Its affiliation with Master Builders Association NSW is formally embedded in the membership offer, connecting the asbestos sector into the broader NSW construction industry. The association maintains a public member directory and runs regular member meetings as a forum for technical discussion and regulator engagement.
Why it matters for asbestos professionals
For NSW removalists, consultants and suppliers, AHRCA NSW membership bundles MBA NSW, IR support and RespFit access that would otherwise be paid for separately. For clients (builders, facility managers, councils, homeowners), it functions as a shortlist of contractors operating to the association's standards. In a market where unlicensed operators are a real risk, being listed alongside AHRCA NSW members is a credibility signal that matters.
