Faculty of Asbestos Management of Australia & New Zealand

aunz

Trans-Tasman faculty for asbestos management professionals.

FAMANZ is the region's only dedicated professional faculty for asbestos work, and the only AU/NZ route to BOHS-recognised asbestos qualifications.

How they got started

FAMANZ was set up as the Australia/New Zealand counterpart to the UK's Faculty of Asbestos Assessment and Management (FAAM), which sits within the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). The express purpose was to provide a regional professional faculty backed by BOHS's internationally recognised asbestos qualifications, filling the gap between general OHS bodies and the licensing regimes of individual AU/NZ jurisdictions. Derek Miller is publicly identified as a founding member. Head office is in Essendon Fields, Victoria.

What they stand for

FAMANZ's vision is to minimise asbestos exposure for workers and the public and to advance the professional knowledge, understanding and practice of asbestos assessment, management and remediation. Its key objectives include establishing clear competence standards for asbestos professionals, supporting members through education and CPD, promoting best practice, encouraging research, and representing the sector nationally and internationally.

How they help the industry

  • BOHS-recognised qualifications: delivers BOHS International Proficiency Qualifications across Australia and New Zealand, including Level 4 asbestos qualifications and the Certificate of Competence in Asbestos
  • Tiered professional membership: Affiliate, Technical (TFAMANZ), Risk Management (MFAMANZ) and Remediation (MFAMANZ), each tied to specific qualifications and experience
  • CPD program: members-only resource library, event recordings and a regular technical webinar series
  • ASBESTOS conference series: multi-day scientific conference with international and local speakers, technical streams and an exhibition hall
  • Professional awards: recognising contribution and emerging leaders across the asbestos sector

Notable initiatives

FAMANZ released its draft Competency Framework for Asbestos Professionals for public consultation from 24 November 2025 to 1 February 2026, covering Asbestos Surveyor, Class A and Class B Removalist, Licensed Asbestos Assessor, Project Manager and Laboratory Analyst, with the final framework to be released at ASBESTOS 2026. The ASBESTOS conference ran in Melbourne in March 2024 (co-hosted with ASEA), in Queenstown in March 2025 as the 4th Scientific Conference, and is scheduled for New Zealand on 22–24 March 2027. The Derek Miller Award, introduced in 2023 and sponsored by Air-Met Scientific, went to Richard Wilkinson (Tetra Tech Coffey) in 2024.

Why it matters for asbestos professionals

For asbestos assessors, licensed assessors, surveyors and lab analysts, FAMANZ membership provides nominal credentials (TFAMANZ or MFAMANZ), a CPD pathway, and direct input into the competency framework that is shaping how the industry will be judged competent across both countries.
