New Zealand Demolition & Asbestos Association

nz

New Zealand peak body for demolition and asbestos industry professionals.

NZDAA is the national industry body for New Zealand's demolition and asbestos sector, marking 20 years of advocacy in 2026 and running the country's main awards programme for the trade.

How they got started

NZDAA was founded in 2006 and in 2026 marks two decades of advocacy, guidance and commitment to demolition and asbestos work done the right way. The association is a not-for-profit headquartered in Auckland, currently led by President Helina Stil. It was established to give demolition contractors, asbestos removalists, surveyors and assessors a shared national home, and to set professional standards across both trades.

What they stand for

NZDAA describes itself as setting the standards for demolition and asbestos practices in New Zealand, and as the trusted voice for the sector. It promotes safe, competent practice nationwide, lifts professional standards via a Code of Conduct all members sign on joining, acts as the sector's interface with WorkSafe New Zealand, and runs public education on the risks of asbestos, including resources for homeowners and for responders to fire-damaged buildings.

How they help the industry

  • Industry directory: public listing at nzdaa.com/industry-directory so clients can find vetted demolition and asbestos firms
  • Training pathways: Certificate III in Demolition via Recognition of Prior Learning, plus a webinar series covering topics such as contract exit training
  • Guidance documents: asbestos practice notes, homeowner guides, fire-damaged building guidance, demolition guidelines, toolbox talks and calculators
  • Contracting tools: standard 3910 contract framework and sub-contractor agreements for the demolition sector
  • Advocacy: close engagement with WorkSafe NZ and related agencies

Notable initiatives

NZDAA prepared the NZDAA Asbestos Industry Report 2022 (hosted by CHASNZ), assessing the state of the New Zealand asbestos industry following the 2016 Regulations. The association's member guidance and training pathways are framed around the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 and WorkSafe NZ's Approved Code of Practice, including the Class A and Class B licensing distinction. The Demolition & Asbestos Awards 2025 were held on 28 November 2025 at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland, across 15 categories including Class A and Class B Removal Best Practice, Asbestos Surveyor or Assessor of the Year, and Asbestos Contractor of the Year.

Why it matters for asbestos professionals

For any New Zealand demolition contractor, licensed asbestos removalist, surveyor or assessor, NZDAA is the dominant national peer body and the sector's main channel into WorkSafe NZ. Membership signals adherence to a published Code of Conduct, the industry directory drives client trust, and the awards programme provides one of the only national platforms for recognising best practice in asbestos removal and demolition.
