NZISM is New Zealand's professional body for generalist workplace health and safety practitioners, with around 2,600 members across 14 regional branches and a founding seat at HASANZ.
How they got started
NZISM was established as an incorporated society in 1972 to give New Zealand's emerging community of safety officers and practitioners a recognised professional home. Over the decades it has grown into a national network with 14 regional branches and now operates the country's primary accreditation pathway for generalist H&S professionals. It is a founding member of the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ).
What they stand for
NZISM positions itself as the standard-setter for generalist H&S practice in New Zealand. Its focus is on lifting capability through recognised accreditation grades, mandatory CPD, peer networking and ethical practice. Through its role inside HASANZ, NZISM advocates for a credible, well-trained H&S workforce and supports the HASANZ Register as a warrant of fitness for businesses choosing an H&S adviser.
How they help the industry
- Accreditation grades: four accredited tiers: Practitioner (PractNZISM), Professional (ProfNZISM), Certified Professional (CertProfNZISM) and a Chartered-equivalent tier via reciprocal pathways
- Reciprocal accreditation: formal mappings with IOSH (Chartered IOSH maps to CertProfNZISM; Certified IOSH maps to ProfNZISM)
- myCPD platform: online tool to log and plan ongoing development; CPD is mandatory to retain accredited grades
- Branch network: 14 branches delivering regular CPD talks, site visits and networking events
- Safeguard partnership: promotes the annual Safeguard National H&S Conference and contributes a regular column to Safeguard magazine
Notable initiatives
NZISM is a Full Member of HASANZ and underwrites the generalist pathway onto the HASANZ Register; applicants must hold ProfNZISM or higher to list. The Society maintains reciprocal accreditation agreements with international bodies, notably IOSH, and has rolled out the myCPD platform to track member professional development. Its Pathways to Professional Accreditation programme maps qualifications and experience to each grade, and partnership with the Safeguard National H&S Conference includes ongoing member discounts and editorial contribution.
Why it matters for asbestos professionals
In New Zealand, asbestos-related risk is largely managed by generalist H&S practitioners advising PCBUs under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the 2016 Asbestos Regulations, and NZISM accredits and CPDs that workforce. For asbestos surveyors, removalists and assessors operating in NZ, NZISM-accredited contacts and a HASANZ Register listing are often the trust signal that lets clients hire confidently.
