In Western Australia, asbestos removal and assessor licences are issued by WorkSafe WA under the WHS Regulations (and the WHS Mines Regulations for mine sites). There are three licence types: Class A removalist, Class B removalist and licensed asbestos assessor.
What each class covers
- Class A: friable asbestos, friable asbestos-contaminated dust, and dust or debris that is more than minor contamination. It also covers non-friable work.
- Class B: more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, and the associated dust or minor contamination.
Nominated supervisors
Every application must nominate at least one supervisor. They must be at least 18 and hold CPCCDE4008 Supervise asbestos removal plus CPCCDE3015 (Class A) or CPCCDE3014 (Class B). For Class A, the supervisor must be on site the whole time the work is happening. For Class B, they must be readily available.
You show the supervisor's experience in the statement of experience inside the application form. WorkSafe WA calls this a critical part of the application, so give full detail. If you later add, replace or remove a supervisor, there's a separate Change to Nominated Supervisor application.
One note on course codes: older guides and some regulator pages still mention CPCCBC4051A Supervise asbestos removal. That unit was superseded in November 2020 by the equivalent CPCCDE4008 Supervise asbestos removal, which is the supervision unit regulators now list. If you're booking training, look for CPCCDE4008 or its newer equivalent version (on training.gov.au, CPCCDE4008 was itself replaced by the equivalent CPCCDE4009 in February 2026). The removal units are CPCCDE3014 Remove non-friable asbestos and CPCCDE3015 Remove friable asbestos, or their newer equivalents. Check with your training provider and the regulator that the course you book meets the licence requirements.
Applying
WorkSafe WA's asbestos licensing guide has the current forms and applicant guide. Read the applicant guide first. It sets out the experience evidence, safety management and equipment details the regulator expects.
Asbestos assessors in WA
An independent licensed asbestos assessor must do air monitoring, clearance inspections and clearance certificates for Class A work. WorkSafe WA keeps a public list of licensed assessors.
Asbestos assessor licence
An asbestos assessor licence is separate from a removal licence. Under the model WHS Regulations, a licensed assessor must carry out air monitoring, clearance inspections and clearance certificates for Class A (friable) removal work. Applicants generally need either the unit Conduct asbestos assessment associated with removal (listed as CPCCBC5014A on regulator pages) or a tertiary qualification in occupational health and safety, occupational hygiene, science, building, construction or environmental health, plus relevant experience. An assessor must be independent of the removalist on the job.
Waste and community rules
In WA, asbestos taken to a waste facility must be wrapped, separated where practicable, and labelled "CAUTION ASBESTOS" in letters at least 50 mm high (DWER fact sheet). See our WA disposal guide.
This guide summarises official regulator information as at October 2026. Requirements and fees change, so always check the regulator's current page before you apply.
