No, we strongly advise against homeowners attempting to remove asbestos themselves, even where regulations may technically permit small amounts of non-friable (bonded) material. Asbestos fibres are microscopic and invisible, and even brief exposure can cause serious and irreversible diseases including mesothelioma and asbestosis that may not appear for decades. A licensed asbestos removalist has the specialist training, protective equipment, and insurance to handle the material safely and dispose of it legally. The modest cost of hiring a professional is insignificant compared to the health risk of disturbing asbestos without proper safeguards.

Asbestos removal is the process of safely taking out asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from buildings and structures. It involves containment, careful removal, and proper disposal. In both Australia and New Zealand, the work must be done by licensed professionals following regulatory requirements designed to protect workers and building occupants from fibre exposure.

In New Zealand, licensed removalists are required for all asbestos removal work under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.
