Asbestos Businesses in South Australia, Australia
Asbestos in South Australia is governed by the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 and WHS Regulations 2012, administered by SafeWork SA. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) separately handles transport and disposal of asbestos waste, with penalties up to $500,000 for individuals and $2 million for corporations for illegal disposal.
The big one: SA requires independent air monitoring by a licensed asbestos assessor for both Class A and Class B removal work. This has been a permanent requirement since 1 January 2021. Most other states only require air monitoring for Class A (friable) work. This means even a standard bonded asbestos removal job needs air monitoring before and during the work. The state runs a portal at asbestos.sa.gov.au for homeowners, workers, and businesses.
SA is part of the ASSEA National Strategic Plan 2024-2030, which aims to accelerate the safe removal of ageing asbestos from buildings across the country. While each state maintains its own regulator, the national plan is pushing toward more consistent rules, and SA's stricter air monitoring requirement goes further than the national baseline.
Licensing
SA has Class A (friable) and Class B (non-friable) removal licences. Licence holders must notify SafeWork SA in writing at least five days before starting removal work. There is an exemption for small jobs: up to 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos can be removed without a licence, provided safe practices are followed.
