Waste Disposal Facilities in Wellington, New Zealand
Licensed facilities that accept and process asbestos waste.
Asbestos waste must be disposed of at facilities specifically licensed to accept it. In Australia, disposal requirements vary by state and territory but generally require asbestos waste to be double-wrapped in heavy-duty polyethylene (minimum 0.2mm thick), clearly labelled, and transported by a licensed waste carrier. Illegal dumping of asbestos waste carries significant penalties.
All licensed asbestos removal requires a licence from WorkSafe: Class A permits removal of any quantity of friable and non-friable asbestos. Nominated supervisors need at least three years of experience including a minimum of 600 days removing friable asbestos. The PCBU must have a certified safety management system, and an independent assessor must do air monitoring and issue clearance certificates. Work in Wellington is regulated by WorkSafe NZ - Asbestos.
Confirm the facility accepts asbestos waste and check their packaging requirements at the gate. Ask about fees for both bonded and friable material, and whether you need a waste tracking certificate before arriving.
