Asbestos Removal in Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Licensed contractors who remove asbestos-containing materials.

Asbestos removal in the ACT is regulated by WorkSafe ACT.

Asbestos has been banned across Australia since 31 December 2003. Homes in the ACT built or renovated before 1990 are the most likely to contain it.

The ACT is stricter than most of Australia. Only a licensed asbestos removalist may remove asbestos from any home or business, so there is no 10 m² DIY allowance. Class A removalists can remove all asbestos, including friable. Class B removalists can remove non-friable asbestos only.

Before you hire, ask for the removalist's licence number and check its class matches your job. Get the clearance certificate in writing when the work is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What licence does an asbestos removalist need in the Australian Capital Territory?
The ACT has Class A and Class B licences like other jurisdictions, but with one major difference: there is no 10 square metre exemption. All asbestos removal from any premises, including residential properties, must be carried out by a licensed removalist. The only exception is work incidental to minor routine maintenance, which makes the ACT the strictest jurisdiction in Australia for asbestos removal.
Can I remove asbestos myself in the Australian Capital Territory?
In almost all cases, no. Unlike other states, the ACT has no small-job exemption, so removing asbestos from any property must be done by a licensed removalist. The only exception is removal incidental to minor routine maintenance. For anything beyond that, you must engage a licensed professional.
What is asbestos removal?
Asbestos removal is the process of safely taking out asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from buildings and structures. It involves containment, careful removal, and proper disposal. In both Australia and New Zealand, the work must be done by licensed professionals following regulatory requirements designed to protect workers and building occupants from fibre exposure.
Do I need a licensed asbestos removalist?
Yes. In Australia, any removal of more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos requires a Class B licence, while all friable asbestos removal requires a Class A licence. In New Zealand, licensed removalists are required for all asbestos removal work under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.
