Asbestos Removal in Northern Territory, Australia

Licensed contractors who remove asbestos-containing materials.

Asbestos removal in the Northern Territory is regulated by NT WorkSafe.

Asbestos has been banned across Australia since 31 December 2003. Homes in the Northern Territory built or renovated before 1990 are the most likely to contain it.

Removal is licensed in two classes. A Class A licence is needed to remove any amount of friable (crumbly) asbestos, and also covers bonded work. A Class B licence is needed to remove more than 10 m² of non-friable (bonded) asbestos, such as fibro sheeting.

Up to 10 m² of bonded asbestos can be removed without a licence, but it must still be done safely, and many owners use a licensed removalist anyway.

The licensed removalist must notify NT WorkSafe in writing at least five days before licensed removal work starts. Only a sudden, unexpected event allows work to start straight away, with phone notice immediately and written notice within 24 hours.

For Class A jobs, air monitoring and the clearance inspection must be done by an independent licensed asbestos assessor. After Class B work, an independent competent person can do the clearance inspection and issue the certificate.

Before you hire, ask for the removalist's licence number and check its class matches your job. Get the clearance certificate in writing when the work is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What licence does an asbestos removalist need in the Northern Territory?
The NT follows the national model, regulated by NT WorkSafe. Class A covers friable asbestos and requires a certified safety management system compliant with AS 4801:2001 plus an independent licensed asbestos assessor. Class B covers 10 square metres or more of non-friable asbestos. Licensed removalists must notify NT WorkSafe in writing at least five days before starting work, and licences last five years.
Can I remove asbestos myself in the Northern Territory?
Less than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos can be removed without a licence if handled safely, but friable asbestos and larger jobs require a licensed removalist. Licensed work needs at least five days' written notice to NT WorkSafe, and in emergencies removalists must call NT WorkSafe for approval before proceeding.
What is asbestos removal?
Asbestos removal is the process of safely taking out asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from buildings and structures. It involves containment, careful removal, and proper disposal. In both Australia and New Zealand, the work must be done by licensed professionals following regulatory requirements designed to protect workers and building occupants from fibre exposure.
Do I need a licensed asbestos removalist?
Yes. In Australia, any removal of more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos requires a Class B licence, while all friable asbestos removal requires a Class A licence. In New Zealand, licensed removalists are required for all asbestos removal work under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.
