Asbestos Businesses in New South Wales, Australia
Asbestos in New South Wales is regulated under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the WHS Regulation 2017. SafeWork NSW handles licensing, inspections, and enforcement. NSW adopted the national model WHS laws, so its framework lines up closely with most other states.
Homeowners and unlicensed workers can remove up to 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos from residential properties, as long as safe work procedures are followed. NSW also runs a dedicated government portal at asbestos.nsw.gov.au aimed at residents, landlords, and renovators. The SafeWork NSW Codes of Practice on managing and removing asbestos carry legal weight under the WHS Regulation.
At the national level, the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) coordinates the Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024-2030, which focuses on safely removing an estimated six million tonnes of ageing asbestos from buildings across the country. While states still have their own rules and regulators, the trend is toward national consistency through ASSEA, and NSW's regulatory settings already align with this direction.
Licensing
NSW has two licence tiers. A Class A licence covers friable (crumbly) asbestos removal and also allows Class B work. A Class B licence is needed for removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable (bonded) asbestos like fibro sheeting. Applicants need approved training through a SafeWork NSW-recognised RTO. Class A applicants must also show experience on at least three supervised removal jobs. There is a separate Asbestos Assessor licence for people who do air monitoring and clearance inspections on Class A work.
