In Queensland, asbestos disposal is controlled through state environmental and waste rules: the material must be wrapped, labelled and taken only to a licensed facility. For current disposal requirements and locations, see WHSQ - Asbestos.

Listed for the Nambour area are Asbestos Logic and Nambour Landfill & Recovery Centre. The Nambour landfill and recovery centre is a key disposal point for the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Queensland requires asbestos waste to be wrapped in 200µm plastic, kept wet and clearly labelled, and larger loads may need to be tracked, so check the gate requirements when you book.

Before you travel, ring the facility to confirm it currently accepts asbestos, what it charges for bonded versus friable material, and whether you need a waste-tracking certificate before arriving. Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I dispose of asbestos waste in Queensland?
Asbestos cannot go in general or kerbside waste anywhere in Australia. In Queensland it must be wrapped, labelled and taken to a facility specifically licensed to accept asbestos. Not every transfer station or landfill takes it, so check the site accepts asbestos and book in before arriving. WHSQ and your local council can point you to the nearest licensed facility.
How must asbestos waste be packaged and transported in Queensland?
Asbestos waste should be kept damp to suppress fibres, wrapped in heavy (200 micron) plastic and labelled as asbestos before transport, with larger loads often needing waste-tracking documentation. These handling rules are consistent across Queensland; the facility you use will confirm its gate requirements and any paperwork needed.
Where can I dispose of asbestos waste?
It has to go to a licensed facility. You cannot put it in household bins, skip bins, or recycling. In Australia, your local council or state environment protection authority can tell you which tips accept asbestos in your area. In New Zealand, it goes to Class A landfills authorised under regional council plans.
How must asbestos waste be packaged for transport?
The waste needs to be double-wrapped in heavy-duty polyethylene sheeting (at least 200 microns thick) or sealed in approved asbestos waste bags. Label each package clearly with "CAUTION - ASBESTOS" and the fibre type if you know it. Keep the material damp while wrapping to stop fibres becoming airborne. Most states and territories also require a waste tracking certificate or consignment document for transport.
What does it cost to dispose of asbestos?
Gate fees at Australian tips generally sit between $70 and $300+ per tonne. It depends on the state, the facility, and whether the material is bonded or friable. Friable asbestos costs more because of the extra handling involved. Some councils run discounted or free disposal days for small residential amounts, so it is worth checking with yours. New Zealand Class A landfill fees are in a similar range. These are gate fees only and do not cover removal, transport, or packaging.
