Frequently Asked Questions

What licence does an asbestos removalist need in Queensland?

Queensland has Class A (friable) and Class B (more than 10 square metres of non-friable) licences, issued by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. Licences last five years and are issued to the business (the PCBU) rather than to individuals. Class A supervisors need at least three years of industry experience after completing the relevant removal and supervision competencies, and a separately licensed asbestos assessor carries out air monitoring and clearance on Class A jobs.

Can I remove asbestos myself in Queensland?

A homeowner can remove up to 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos without a licence if it is handled safely. Friable asbestos and larger quantities must go to a licensed removalist. Because cutting or breaking asbestos releases fibres, a licensed removalist is the safer option even for small jobs.

What is asbestos removal?

Asbestos removal is the process of safely taking out asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from buildings and structures. It involves containment, careful removal, and proper disposal. In both Australia and New Zealand, the work must be done by licensed professionals following regulatory requirements designed to protect workers and building occupants from fibre exposure.

Do I need a licensed asbestos removalist?

Yes. In Australia, any removal of more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos requires a Class B licence, while all friable asbestos removal requires a Class A licence. In New Zealand, licensed removalists are required for all asbestos removal work under the Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016.
